Legalizing it--in my opinion--would result in take a lot of the "gateway" out of "gateway drug".
A new user would smoke it, enjoy it, and know it's legal. They would have a reserve about trying anything that steps into the "illegal" zone.
When marijuana is illegal, you naturally assume that every other illegal drug is categorized by weed. And that's what gets people in trouble or worse.
